What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics (also referred to as dentofacial orthopedics) is a specialized form of dentistry focusing on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial abnormalities.

What is an Orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has received two to three years of additional training and experience. Your orthodontist is able to straighten teeth, correct misaligned jaw structure, and improve the function of your smile.

What is the best age to visit an Orthodontist?

If you want to improve the look and feel of your smile, then any age can be a great age to see the orthodontist. The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first visit an orthodontist around the age of seven; however, orthodontic treatment is not exclusive to children and teens, with about one in every five orthodontic patients being over the age of 21. Whether you’re considering treatment for yourself or for a child, any time is a good time to visit the orthodontist.

If I get braces, how long do I have to wear them?

The amount of time spent in braces will vary depending on the individual patient, because every smile responds differently to treatment. Treatment times can take anywhere between six and 30 months, but most standard treatments take about 22 months.

Is it required that my family dentist schedule my appointment with the orthodontist?

No, it is not! Many of our patients are referred by their family dentist, however, many other patients take the initiative to schedule an examination themselves. If you are interested in Orthodontic Treatment – a referral is NOT required. Feel free to contact us directly to set up an appointment!

What will I learn from the initial examination?

There are five essential questions that we will cover during the initial examination:

  1. Is there an orthodontic problem, and if so, what is it?
  2. What must be done to correct the problem?
  3. Will any teeth need to be removed?
  4. How long will the treatment take to complete?
  5. How much will the treatment cost?
How much will braces cost? Are financing options available? How does my insurance work?

It is impossible to give an exact cost for treatment until we have examined you. We will cover the exact cost and financial options during the initial examination. We have several financing options available to accommodate your needs, and we will review these with you. We will also review your insurance policy and help to maximize your benefit and file your claims.
